Summer School opportunities in Africa and Middle East
The summer schools listed below are only a small sample of the global opportunities available. While the list below provides a taste of what is out there, it is by no means exhaustive, so do investigate other countries, institutions or programmes if you can't find the right opportunity for you.
When you apply for a summer school listed below, you will (with some exceptions) do this independently without direct involvement from the UCL Study Abroad team. However, you will be welcome to apply for a bursary to support this activity. For information about scholarships, please visit our funding webpage.
- University of Cape Town Global Short Academic Programmes
This summer, the University of Cape Town (UCT) are offering two short-term programmes; Afropolitanism, Social Justice and Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Water Management.
Afropolitanism, Social Justice and Entrepreneurship
This programme is designed to inspire participants to become global citizens. It exposes students to new cultures and allows them to build networks across borders – creating a space to challenge perspectives and develop a wealth of understanding of the global community. The course is offered through the Faculty of Humanities.
Visits to historical, heritage and entrepreneurial community sites will allow students to experience the vibrant and diverse cultures that influence and shape the character of Cape Town and South Africa, as well as expose students to innovative initiatives communities are undertaking to seek solutions to social issues.
Students will gain an understanding of social and political processes that have shaped modern South Africa and the central political questions facing post-apartheid South Africa.
Dates: 14th June - 9th July 2021
Tuition Fee: $3960 - this includes tuition, accommodation and field trips.
Sustainable Water Management in Africa
This programme, which uses an inter- and transdisciplinary approach, is aimed at the next generation of critical thinkers. Participants are empowered to engage with environmental, technical, socio-cultural, economic and political challenges around water to create an understanding of water’s diverse role in society and in sustaining livelihoods. The course is offered through the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment and convened by a team of experts from the UCT Future Water Institute.
The desired outcome is to challenge participants to consider water in a new way, and to enable them to apply learnings in their own context.
Dates: 26th July - 6th of August 2021
Tuition Fee: $3000 - this includes tuition, accommodation and field trips.
